FAQ

  • How long does it take for a commission to be completed?
I am usually booked up for several months in advance, so if you have a specific date in mind that you need your painting for, best to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Christmas time is my busiest, so early booking is recommended to secure a slot for any Christmas gifts, ideally around June/July. Each commission is unique and individual to your specifications. This means that size, the subject of the artwork, ( portrait, equine, animal ) as well as the medium used and also framing of your artwork, will influence the finished timescale. Good quality photos, whilst not absolutely essential, are helpful. If possible, I will come and take my own photos. No extra charge will be made for this if local to Dundee/Angus area. With that in mind, there is no average amount of time for each commission as there are so many factors in each, however, I'll be able to give you an idea of how long it will take to complete .
  • How long will it take for my painting or print to arrive?
If prints are in stock, 2-5 working days once dispatch within mainland UK with the exception of the highlands as this may take 5-7 days. If I need to re-order prints, depending on supplier, may take up to 5 days extra. Most paintings take 3-5 days and a signature is required upon delivery. Please make sure yourself or someone is able to sign for you, as your artwork is not allowed to be left with a neighbour. If you're local to Dundee area, you're more than welcome to come and collect your print or painting upon a collection appointment being made.
  • Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes, as both my time and materials go into creating the exact commission you want, I do ask that a 25% deposit is paid when placing your order. This will be sent out via an invoice and will give you different options to pay.
  • What type of materials do you use?
For oil paintings, I mostly use Senellier, Rembrandt or Windsor Newton oil paints on stretched cotton or linen canvas, sometimes I paint on primed board for a different effect. For the pastels, Senellier, Unison and Rembrandt soft pastels on Mi-Tients Touch card. Charcoal studies can be on paper, I also use Mi-Tients touch card sometimes as it has a lovely texture.
  • What kind of paper do you use for your prints?
Giclee prints are on Hahnemuhle or Arches Aquarelle acid free quality art paper.
  • Can I return my print if I'm not happy with it?
All prints are made to order and in return are non refundable. My aim is to produce a print which is as close as possible to the original artwork. I take care to carefully reproduce as closely as I can, however, since everyone is viewing via a different source, the colours may vary slightly to the ones you see on your own monitor. If you are not happy with your print because it has been damaged in transit then please contact contact@lindajohnsonart.com
  • Do all commissions require a consultation?
Yes, absolutely ! It is so important to me that I understand why and who/what it is that you'd like captured in a piece of artwork. This enables me to try and bring out your relationsip and connection within the painting. Consultations range from 1-2 hours and can be done in person preferably, if possible here at the studio, so that you can see examples of different types of artwork available. If it's not possible for you to visit in person, then we can have a chat about it on the phone, or by email.
  • Prices
Prices vary depending on the size of artwork you choose, but the medium and content will have the most bearing on the final cost . I generally don't charge extra to include a full body study of your horse/dog etc, ( as opposed to head and shoulder ) unless a complex background is required. Likewise, no extra charge is made to include any tack on your horse artwork. The shape of the artwork will be mostly determined by the subject, of course, if you have any specific requests, then I will be happy to accomodate. As a guide, a single head and shoulder portrait Charcoal / graphite studies start at around £300 for an approximate A4 size Pastels £ 550 Oils £850 Monochrome and watercolour sketches 8x8" from £180 There are lots of different size/medium options available, please feel free to get in touch with your requirements, I will do my best to accommodate.
  • Framing and care of your artwork
A carefully chosen frame will enhance your artwork without being overbearing. I can help with framing ideas if you are local to the area, I use both EAS in Broughty Ferry and Canvas Art Gallery in Forfar. Both offer an excellent and knowledgable service, they will be happy to discuss options with you. Traditionally, oil paintings are not covered with glass. My own preference would be not to include glass, but it really is a personal choice. Oils are fairly robust , but as they are usually on stretched canvas, care should be taken to avoid contact with anything sharp! I often paint on gesso primed board, or linen bonded to board. This gives a different look/texture. It is also good for paintings travelling long distances, as they are more sturdy than a stretched canvas. Pastels on card are much more delicate, and require framing as soon as possible after completion, to protect them. They will need to be mounted with a card mount, to keep the artwork away from the glass. They will be more prone to fading if placed in direct sun, so need consideration when placing in your home. However, framing galleries can supply conservation glass which is UV protected to help alleviate this problem. It is, of course, more costly. Charcoal studies are very popular. They can be very effective and dramatic. They need the same consideration as pastels when framing.
