A few years ago, I was contacted by a lovely lady named Wendy. She had seen some of my art on social media and contacted me to ask if I could help.
She co-ordinates the artists who donate to the amazing charity Egypt Equine Aid ( find their Facebook page here)
I didn’t need much persuasion, they need all the help they can get.
I had a look at their Facebook page and cried. These poor souls, horses, donkeys, mules and even foals (yes, really) are forced to work in awful conditions in extreme heat for the tourist industry in the pyramid region of Cairo. It is a very harsh existence for most of them, sadly.
I won’t elaborate here on their plight, but if you wish, you can see for yourselves via the link here to their page. Be warned, some of the images are hard to see.
Many equines in Egypt are descendants of our own war horses, some 10,000 were left behind after the First World War.
There is hope, though.
Founded by Jill and Warren Barton in 2014, EEA with their wonderful team are committed to educating the local people to care for their equines, they will take in and treat all manner of desperate cases and advise their owners on better care. Very slowly, things are changing, especially with the younger generation.
I don’t know how they cope day after day with the plight of these trusting gentle creatures. I have huge respect for them, I know I couldn’t do it.
Instead, I donate paintings for their online auctions. Many artists from different countries donate art, lots of fabulous pieces to bid on every time, well worth a look!
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please feel free to spread the word if you feel you’d like to.
Linda
